The Corporate Transparency Act went into effect on January 1, 2024. Deadlines for small businesses to comply is December 31, 2024. The penalties for non-compliance are stiff - up to $10,000 fines or imprisonment for up to two years for a criminal violation.

The CTA creates a national company beneficial ownership registry and requires reporting companies to provide information of its owners and applicants to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).
